 Once every few months one of Shemspeed’s resident DJs, DJ Balagan, hits us with a free mix for the velt. This time it’s a blend of Baile Funk joints off CDrs which he collected while in Brazil. On June 10 at 8 p.m., the festival will present Electro Morocco and DJ Balagan at the restaurant and lounge called Station 9, at 1438 U St. in northwest D.C. Electro Morocco is a band that performs a mixture of electro beats and Middle Eastern flavor, while DJ Balagan (aka Sam Hopkins) samples dance tracks incorporating Sephardic elements and other ethnic musical styles.
“Being the nation’s capital, there’s a big capacity for the DC JCC to show the international community there the diverse musical tastes of Jewish culture today,” said Mr. Hopkins, a Kansas City native who moved to Baltimore’s Charles Village neighborhood four years ago. He said the festival will be a “mosaic of what’s going on in Jewish music today. I’m excited not only to perform there but to see the other entertainers.”
Mr. Hopkins, 26, said he hopes members of the local Jewish community will attend the festival and sample the musical fare. He views the festival as part of a Jewish renaissance taking place in Washington’s downtown area.
“To have D.C. and the D.C. area trying to reestablish its Jewish core is healthy for everyone in this area,” Mr. Hopkins said. “I hope people from Baltimore come out. You shouldn’t miss this opportunity.”
