Jew, No? Juno, Yes!

junoanimated.jpgRunning a Jewish culture site is most annoying when blown away by something non Jewish and not being justifiably able to review it. Salvation came this time in the form of a Aleph Bet poster on the wall of Bleecker’s room. It was shown for a split second in the beginning of the film, but I thought, “nah’ forget it” … it’s just my imagination. or what they call, “projection”. It was my childhood room that I was seeing not his. But then they flashed to it again and it clearly was not projection, or at least not the psychological kind. It was real and it was my salvation, because now I am justifiably writing about this movie for my Jewish culture site. This movie now has a Jewish element and beyond the Jew bucks that went into it.

The only thing is, what was the point of it? The parents did not seem particularly semitic and there was not one mention of anything Jewishy. I think it might have just been a visual secret handshake of sorts. Like a, “we are down, we know who you are…..” to all the Jews that will eventually watch this film. I don’t get why, but it worked.

Juno was brilliant. Juno the character was also brilliant. She reminded me of Sarah Silverman with her amazing wit and her perfect comedic timing. (back off Silverman haters…). Bleecker played himself (himself being George Michael of Arrested Development). but that’s just fine with me, because I freaking love George Michael (not the real one. bathroom stalls ain’t my thing). I love any movie that makes you laugh throughout, but also could keep a compelling story going while creating a dramatic style that isn’t forced. The end when Bleecker and Juno sing to each other the lines, “I don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else but you.”..how could you not just eat that stuff up? I left the movie turning to my wife and being like, “wait, so. lets review again. this movie was written by a stripper, right?”.
“yes”
“cool!”
