Sephardic Music Festival NIGHT ONE

It’s the return of the Sephardic Music Festival except this year we got more events than ever in bigger venues than ever and we got T Shirts and the sephardic equivalent of Latkes!

So what did you come to or miss?
OPENING NIGHT AT BB KINGS & THE SPEHARDIC SCHOLARSHIP SERIES!!!!

• Soulfarm, The Sarah Aroeste & Roberto Rodriguez Projet, and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb
with very special guest Consuelo Luz!

Soulfarm hit up the Sephardic Fest to enfuse the middle eastern music and artists into their annual chanuka night at BB’s. Ayelet Rose Gottlieb who blew away the SMF audience last year at the Jewish Museum as part of our Women of Tzadik series, did it again this year with a new quartet! Her music is a theatrical journey of poetic sounds. Sarah Aroeste debut new material from her new project with the famed, Roberto Rodriguez and Consuelo Luz, who just happened to be in town from her home of New Mexico jumped on and blew everyone away with her intimate Ladino singing.

Earlier that night we brought back the SEPHARDIC SCHOLARSHIP SERIES, this one was dubbed, “Sepharad: New Approaches to a Musical Identity”. The panelist and currator was Samuel Thomas, he was joined by Evan Rappaort and Smadar Levi in an audience-interactive panel discussion with the artists and with ethnomusicologists about the field of Sephardic Jewish music. The primary focus of discussion centered on the role of modernity in Sephardic music, including how these artists negotiate preservation and innovation. All this was followed by a performance by Asefa and Smadar who blew it away, Arabic and Sephardic style, with her 5 musicians!!! That all went down at The Graduate Center CUNY main PHD campus.
