Yo Gabba Gabba

I don’t know how many of you all watched The OC back when it was on. It was a Shemspeed guilty pleasure, Seth was our boy, we wanted to dork out with him to indie rock and when he finally got that Spiderman kiss from Summer, man, those were the days. Seth was really just a manifestation of Josh Shwartz, the director of the show. When you think about it though, Josh probably never got the hottest girl in high school, but in The OC anything was possible and so Josh/Seth got her….it’s like Woody Allen, he would write into in his movies what he couldn’t get right in his real life. ok, ok, this article isn’t really about what Shwartz or Allen could get right, it’s more about directors pushing indie and hipster music into mainstream shows and Shwartz was the kind of that, he took the biggest mainstream teenager show at the time and would debut tracks by Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie and even the Beastie Boys before they would be heard anywhere else. This trend seems to have trickled down to the kids, check out the director of “Yo Gabba Gabba”. He has MGMT and Andy Samberg as special guests for a show targeting an age that wouldn’t get any of their aesthetic. The MGMT episode is for the Boerem Hill/Park Slope kids, I guess, eitherway check it out, you see MGMT getting all Andy Warhol and throwing paint all over the walls as if it was a Basquiat collab. Then we got Andy Samberg who boasts that they treat him real well on the set because he has his name on his bottle cap 😉 oh Andy, we want you so bad!
