Monologues Take Manhattan

And Miami and New Jersey and Chicago…

For those of you who don’t know, I have the privilege of performing in a show called Birthright Israel Monologues, which is an evening of solo performances of monologues, spoken word and hip-hop exploring Jewish identity inspired by a 10-day trip through Israel. Basically, you take 15 Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni, have them work with an incredible director – ahem, Vanessa Hidary, aka The Hebrew Mamita, of Def Poetry Jam fame – have them write hilarious and touching stories about their lives and Jewish identity and you get an hour and a half show that brings people to tears from the sheer brilliance of it (do I sound like a bragging Jewish grandmother?).

Monologues first ran in New York City in November 2007, and after performances in Philly, New Orleans and Sarasota, its fourth run continues in New York at the Triad Theatre. Every story has something people of every race and religion can relate to, so you don’t need to be a member of the Tribe to get the jokes.

Don’t believe me? Check out the show for yourself tonight or if you need even more proof, check out this video.

Not in NYC? Don’t worry, Monologues is coming to a city near you with upcoming performances in Miami, New Jersey and Chicago with more on the way. Check www.birthrightisrael.com/monologues for the full schedule.
