The Levi Okunov Fashion Show did not disappoint. They took a break last year from the Frying Pan location, but last night it was back on in full force with hasidic rebels and fashionistas celebrity style, like Heatherett, who is in the Shemspeed flickr batch (scroll down to click to view). I never ever wanted to use the term, that as a bad joke my old roommate and I came up with, “dachau-chic”, but it definitely fit some of the vibe last night. The girls were more emaciated than 90’s Calvin Klein ads and their faces which had been painted white mixed with their lack of any sort of expression and the hasidic chanting of Shlomo Carlebach in the background brought visions of Poland in the 40;s to my mind. It’s weird to say, but it was what I was feeling. That was of course just for the run way part. The pieces themselves were unique and very cool and the night overall was amazing. Levi’s brother put together a live trance band for the event and Y-Love and Diwon jumped on and got the party crazy right away. The Frying Pan, on Pier 66, is a hard place not to get in party mode.
