Songs in the Key of Hanukkah
Erran Baron Cohen (brother of Sacha Baron Cohen and composer of the original music for Borat and Da Ali G Show) is releasing a Hanukkah CD on November 18 called Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah (New Line Records.) On the record, Baron Cohen updates, remixes and expands the music associated with Hanukkah. And Shemspeed was in the studio with him and Y-Love in Berlin video taping the “in the making” moments. Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah is a collection of songs that brings the ancient music of Hanukkah into the 21st Century. The songs combine klezmer, reggae, electronica, hip hop, tango, pop and other genres, all fluently woven into something uniquely Baron Cohen’s. The album contains five reinterpretations of classic favorites as well as five original tunes created exclusively for this project, all sung in English, Hebrew or Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish).
The songs are performed by some world-class Jewish singers, including Israeli superstar Idan Raichel, world-music diva Yasmin Levy and New York City-based rapper Y-Love (who actually rhymes in Yiddish on this one and drops more science on 2 other tracks). The itunes version of the album includes a clib track of O Hanuka by Diwon.
